Update, July 2, 2009: An interim budget is in place through July 14, which gives state legislators more time to work out differences and create a two-year spending plan. Library funding remains unchanged during this interim. While the process continues, it is our hope that the burden of balancing the budget will not fall disproportionately on public libraries when so many families are relying on library services more than ever!
We truly appreciate the tremendous show of support from our library users. Thousands of people across the state and right here at home have called or written their legislators to voice their support for the Dayton Metro Library and public libraries throughout Ohio. We also appreciate the legislators who have offered support.
If you have not already done so, please sign our petition to let the governor and legislators know how much you appreciate and depend on the Dayton Metro Library.
There is still time to contact key legislators. Click here for contact information and to read more about the budget situation. Regular updates are also posted here.

Summer is here, and the heat and humidity make it the perfect time to take it easy with a good book at the pool, or in a hammock, or inside with the air conditioning. Here are some great suggestions from library users on how to beat the heat this summer:
- Kathy Herman's Phantom Hollow Series: Ever Present Danger, Never Look Back, & The Grand Scheme are good pool side reads but I'm still looking for the next great American novel.
- Heart and Soul - Maeve Binchy seems to capture the essence of love and good relationships in this book!
- Primeval: Season 1 - I love BBC America! I started watching this show on the Sci-Fi Channel and LOVED it. I saw that the library had it and decided to get it. This is a really great show. I learn something new with every episode.
- Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson - It is good to read about true humanity in the midst of terror and chaos.

| The managers of the Dayton Metro Library agreed to give up raises to help meet a growing budget problem. The move will save the library about $80,000. Because of cuts in state revenue, library income will be more than $4 million lower this year than in 2008. Read more about it here. |
